| Sun 11 Nov 07 - A ZBrush 3.1 and ZMapper problem found its solution |
|
I've encounter a problem in zbrush ver 3.1. In zmapper plugin to be more specific. I've managed to solve it so I wanted to share the solution with others in case someone else finds it in his way.
The problem: I've created a low poly mesh in blender and also unwrapped it. I've imported it to zbrush, added detail and it was time to create the normal map with zmapper. Unfortunately the zmapper created a messed up texture.
What is causing this: Apparently the problem was because some UV coordinates were close to 0.0 or 1.0. This confused the zmapper for some reason.
The Solution: In order to avoid this you have to leave a small padding in the UV unwrapping process (in blender for example). Don't move the points to close to the borders.
Hope I've helped someone.

| Wed 31 Oct 07 - Mini Review - Valve's Orange Box |
|
Orange Box is a package from Valve Software containing Half Life 2, HL2 episode 1, HL2 episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2. From this package "HL2" and "HL2 ep. 1" are rereleased and everything else is a new product. Some words for every game:
HL2: The second best FPS ever made. Enough said ( the first is ofcource Half Life ). Score 95%
HL2 ep. 1: Didn't like it. Everything was poor. The story, the presentation, the battles, the length, no new weapons and no vehicles to drive. Score 70%
HL2 ep. 2: Great addition to HL saga. The graphics are good and the additions to the source engine fancy. Intense story, lots off dialogs and some hints about G-mans' origin. The only bad thing is the ending because it makes you need for more and the waiting for another episode is long. Score 92%
Portal: One of the best puzzle games around. In this game you have a gun that opens a 2 way portal. With the use of this gun you solve puzzles to end the level. Nice graphics, simple controls. In the opposite side, portal, is not that challenging and its sort. But if you consider that this is part of a bigger package the length is fine. Score 85%
Team For. 2: TF2 is a multiplayer only FPS with classes and cartoony graphics. I didnt had the chance to play it for more than 2 hours. Its fast and because of that I dont think I will become a fan of it. Tactical FPSs are a more challenging multiplayer experience (IMO). Score N/A
For 40Euros Orange Box is a great deal especially if you don't own HL2. |

| Fri 12 Oct 07 - The Nintendo's Wii phenomenon |
|
For those who don't know, Wii is the latest video game console by Nintendo. The console is equipped with an innovative controller and its selling like crazy. Let's investigate the console a little.
The processing power is very low even with the previous generation standards. The unfortunate is that the developers don't try to squeeze the processors and the result is even worst. Also the graphical gap between the Wii and the competition is so big that the developers don't port games to Wii.
One second big problem is with the games. The console lucks 3rd party support, most of the games are at least mediocre according to the reviewers, there is not even one great hit just like zelda64 was for the N64, many games are more like minigames. This is because most of the 3rd party developers exploit the Wii's success. They make bad games, small games and without quality. Wii is like a fast food restaurant and the games like burgers, the difference is that the burgers taste good.
The Wiimote controller is really innovative but two problems come up. If some developers want to make a game to multiple consoles they have to make lots of gameplay adjustments in order to fit it into the Wii's control scheme. Thats a second reason of why there are no ports. Also it doesn't make the control more accurate (mouse/keyboard beats everything).
The internet play is there but without many multiplayer games, at least it exists.
The question still remains. Why Wii is selling like crazy? Well... its cheaper, they have a good marketing strategy and it targers to casual gamers witch are more than hardcore ones. The thing is that the console is not that bad its just that it targets to a different group of gamers. Gamers who like gadgets, buy them and then abandon them.
UPDATE: According to a just released article some figures suggest that 67% of Wii owners haven't used the system lately. This proves my last speculation about gadgets. Read the full article here. |

| Mon 24 Sep 07 - Back from the dead caring a Bioshock copy |
|
Its been a long time since I posted something here so I've decided to add something today. Lets talk about... Bioshock
Unless you are living in a cave, Bioshock is the new hit in the FPS genre. The team behind it consists of some key people who worked in System Shock. Throughout the development they kept reminding us their involvement in System Shock. They created some hype, they talked big words but they kept up to their promises. Bioshock is a great game.
The positive: Great and intense story, levels with lots of variety, the atmosphere is there also, the plasmids are fun, the graphics are great in an artistic way, 101 ways to kill
The negative: The weapons suck, the hacking game is boring, the final boss battle is sooo classic, you wont have a reason to play it again (no multiplayer, no ulockables), we want more RPG elements please!!!
Overal: 85%
